Violin teacher scam

This check scam targets violin teachers and other music teachers, costing them thousands of dollars. The criminals (most of them from West Africa) try to trick them into cashing a fake chashier's check for them and wiring them a large portion of the cash. This is a variation on a scam targeting professional photographers as well as classified ad sites for cars, motorbikes, horses, etc.
This scam relies on the fact that a check can bounce weeks and months after funds have already been made available for it by the bank. When you deposit a check, it always remains your responsibility, not the bank's. If you have already withdrawn and wired out cash against the check you will have in effect borrowed money off the bank against the promise that the check is valid, which it wasn't, and given that money to criminals.
In the "violin teacher scam" the criminal poses as someone who is looking for a teacher to provide several months of intensive violin tuition for a family member. He will send you a large cashier's check. If you receive such checks, do not try to cash them. Take them to the local police. Any money your account may be initially credited with when you deposit them will be debited again when the check bounces. For example, the "customer" may arrange for tuition costing $2000 but mail you a check for $5000. Once the bank credits your account with $5000 you will be asked to wire $3000 back to the sender which supposedly was earmarked for the son's airline ticket or some other purpose. Once the check bounces you will be owing $3000 plus a bounced check fee to your bank. It can hurt your credit rating, not to mention the possibility of a criminal investigation for passing a bad check.
Here are some red flags to watch out for:
- The customer will usually be contacting you from abroad for teaching his son.
- Your qualifications or your location won't be of much interest to him.
- The father won't be concerned how his son will manage without him (he may mention he'll be staying with family).
- The customer will want to send you a check well before the first lesson to cover several weeks or months of tuition.
- The check will be larger than your fee (usually by several thousand dollars). You will be expected to wire the excess amount somewhere by Western Union or Moneygram.
- The person's English is usually substandard.
Please send us any such emails you may have received and we will publish them (withholding your name and email address, of course) to warn other music teachers and to assist law enforcement investigating such cases.

Where do these fraud emails come from?
The above emails are sent through Gilat and Quark Telecom, which are satellite broadband providers in Israel and Sweden, respectively. Typically, when these providers are used for fraud the customers involved are Internet cafes in Nigeria.

Gilat is a satellite ISP near Tel Aviv, Israel that has many customers in Nigeria. They lie about the country they're based in (no, Tel Aviv is not in Great Britain, which is obvious from the street address). Their lie fools many IP-to-country tracking services such as http://ip-to-country.webhosting.info/node/view/36 which report "United Kindom" for such IP addresses.

Thanks for replying back to my online job posting, requiring your
tutorial I would like to make a tutoring arrangement between you and
my 10 years old Daughter for the month of June-July 2009, I would like
you to tutor her within a period of 1 month, on a schedule basis of 1
hr Daily, 3 times weekly, totaling 12 times in a month. I am willing
to pay $50/hr. I would like to use these medium to inform you that my
Daughter don't live in the US, she would be flying from Dubai to the
US, I want you to teach her during her 8 month stay in the US, if
there is need to extend your services, an amendment would be made to
your salary. she would be dropped off/picked up by his nanny during
the hours of teaching at any location you want the Tutoring to take
place in your area.You would be receiving a check drawn from a Bank in
the US, from my business associates in the US, since i am from Dubai
and right now am in Cuba for a business trip the payments wont be
honored in any bank there in Dubai or here in Cuba , These check would
be made out for the cost of the tutorial services you are rendering,
and also for the living expense, nanny fees of my Daughter .
Regarding this- I hope i can trust you with these payments, as the
payment would be made out in excess, so all you have to do is Deposit
and cash the payment at your bank, deduct your tutorial service fee,
which should be $50 per hour X 12 Times a Month = $600 i would include
an additional $100 for run around fee and any additional text book you
might be needing- so $700 is what you deduct from the check you
receive , whatever the remaining balance is after deduction of the
$700 go ahead and deduct Money Gram or Western union transfer sending
charges for sending out the remainder to the Nanny who would be
contacting you with further arrangements and instructions regarding
pickup/drop off of my Daughter to the library where you would always
teach her. So i hope i can trust you that you will teach my Daughter
good academics and some moral respects so that they can be good to
their self in the future, i hope i can count on you for the tutorial
and the money to be sent to the Nanny. I look forward to read a
detailed message from you containing the following information, if you
are OK with my arrangements.
